In general, the response to treatment of cancer depends on the size of the cancer. Invisible cancer cells respond best and large cancers respond the least. Invisible cells can be eliminated by lesser dose of radiosurgery. Delivery of higher dose of radiation to the visible disease is Boost Therapy.
The boost treatment for cancer with CyberKnife is very valuable after conventional radiotherapy. It is also an ideal technique to deliver good doses to the tumour in cases of recurrence or remaining cancer tissue following earlier radiation therapy.
When is CyberKnife Boost given?
After initial radiation therapy of 5 weeks duration, which can be decided before the start of radiotherapy
After the completion of regular radiotherapy treatment for cancer and when the disease is still persisting
If the cancer is active and still present 3 months after completion of radiotherapy
When the cancer comes back to an area treated earlier
The common cancer sites that require CyberKnife Boost are:
Glioblastoma multiform and other brain cancers
Cancer of the nasopharynx
Cancer in the head and neck region
Other cancers including sarcomas, pelvic and prostate cancer
